A Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Southeast, Nigeria has sentenced a 32 year old man, Emmanuel Nwonu to 12 years imprisonment for stealing N41,465 from the church offering box of St.Patrick Catholic Church located in the State Capital.
Police said the convict forced his way into the church after church service, broke the offering box and stole the money and escaped, unknown to him that CCTV camera installed inside the church captured him.
Police further stated that nemesis however, caught up with him when he went back to the church to steal more money and the security personnel on duty caught him and handed him over to the Police.
During investigation, according to the Police, the convict confessed to the crime and stated: “I forced my way into the church, broke the offering box to steal the money and that hunger and joblessness pushed me to commit the crime.
“I used the stolen money to take care of myself and my blind father. I am a driver, but jobless and since I lost my job I have not been able to find another job and that is why the devil told me to enter inside the church to steal the money, Nwonu stated.
When the two count charges of stealing was read to him, he pleaded guilty to the charges and the Chief Magistrate, A.C Nwosu sentenced Nwonu to 12 imprisonment without an option of fine
