A 39 years old driver, Onyekachi Ayogu has been arrested and arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing his employer’s properties including a Toyota RAV4 SUV valued millions of Naira belonging to Mr Adeyemi Adiatu after he left him at home on trust and traveled abroad. 

A Police source said the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Iliasu Ahmed  in charge of Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, ordered his men led by Inspector Monday Ofolor to arrest and investigate the accused following a petition by the complainant.

Ayogu, who hails from Southeast Nigeria was charged before the Igbosere Chief Magistrate”s Court, Lagos on a two count charge of felony and stealing.

Police Counsel, Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Francis Igbinosa told the Court in charge No M/12/2020 that the accused committed the offence in May, 2018 at NICON Town Estate, Lekki, Lagos.

Igbinosa told the Court that the accused betrayed the trust reposed in him by his employer and broke into his bedroom to steal $4,000, N370,000 cash, one Rolex Wristwatch valued at $11,000 and a Toyota Rav. 4 SUV with Reg. number LSR 966 AE valued N2m and escaped.

Igbinosa said that the long arm of the Law however finally caught up with the accused in 2020 after about two years of Police manhunt when he was arrested at a hide out in Lagos.

He said that during investigation, the accused confessed to the crime and said that he sold the stolen properties and used the proceeds to complete a project in his village.

Igbinosa said the offences the accused committed were punishable under sections 339 and 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused however, pleaded not guilty to the charges in the open court and Magistrate Abdusalam granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Meanwhile, the case was adjourned till 30th June, 2020.
